Brief

Over the past decade, I’ve collaborated with nerdcore rapper Mega Ran on various projects, including single cover art, special edition cassette tapes, and a music video. When Mega Ran asked for help with a music video for his new album single, I eagerly started developing storyboards and previs renders. My plans changed when my wife and I found out we were pregnant with our second baby girl, and on top of that, a new job opportunity would force us to move, eliminating most of my available free time to work on the project. A second chance to contribute to the project popped up when, during my paternity leave, Mega Ran reached out again, asking if there was any way to use the work I did to create a social media reel to help promote the single. I decided I had to help and figured out a way forward. In the following two weeks, I sourced additional set pieces, created additional 3d models, animated the characters and set pieces, shot directed, and edited the music video promo short. The video received positive feedback on Instagram and TikTok, and I was thrilled to be able to contribute in the end.

Sound On

Initial Character Designs

The original concept for the music video featured Mega Ran and G. Love (who is featured on the single) as beachgoers and 80s-style wrestling action figures. The main character, a young boy, would play with these figurines and eventually lose them early in the video. The figurines would then come to life and embark on an adventure full of mishaps and visual lyrical nods across the boardwalk, ultimately finding their way back to the boy. Initially, I envisioned the music video to appear rendered in a needle-felt style, giving the music video a cute and sentimental visual quality.
